D'Original: a new smile on your original teeth

Many people come to believe there are just two options: keep their teeth as they are, or have them all taken out for a restoration on implants. D'Original is a third option. We keep the teeth that can be saved and build a new fixed restoration on them, across the whole arch.

The teeth look like yours, because underneath they really are yours.

Fixed temporaries from day one. The final restoration in 5 working days, in eligible cases, after an assessment, because we make it in the lab in our building.

Results vary from one patient to another.

What D'Original is

D'Original is a fixed full-arch restoration supported by the patient's own teeth, not by implants. It is done at D'Institute, in Cluj-Napoca, in 5 working days, in eligible cases, after an assessment.

The teeth that can be kept are treated first: root canals, gums, whatever else is needed. Then a new restoration is placed over them, from one end of the arch to the other, joining them together.

What you gain:

  • Efficient chewing on both sides. The restoration is fixed and joins the teeth together, so the force of your bite is spread across the whole arch. For many people this first shows in small things: a crust of bread, biting into an apple, a meal where they no longer have to pick which side to chew on.
  • You feel the pressure on your teeth. Teeth sense pressure through the periodontal ligament, the ligament that holds them in the bone. Because they stay under the restoration, they keep that sensation.
  • You smile without hiding. The teeth look like yours, because underneath they really are yours.

Who D'Original is for

D'Original suits people who still have enough teeth on the arch that can be kept, with enough bone around them. How many teeth, and in what condition, can't be known until after an assessment: X-ray, clinical examination, scan.

Situations where an assessment is worth having:

  • you have been advised to have all the teeth on one arch extracted and want to know if some can stay;
  • several of your teeth are loose because of gum disease;
  • you have old dental work that has come loose or broken, and the teeth underneath are still there;
  • you chew on just one side and have put off treatment for years.

If the assessment shows that some teeth can no longer be kept, the right option may be D'Original Plus (below).

How it works, step by step

  1. The assessment.

    A panoramic X-ray or CBCT taken at the clinic, a clinical examination and a digital scan of your teeth. The dentist shows you on the X-ray which teeth stay and why. You leave with a written plan and the price.

  2. The simulation.

    Using the scan, the dentist and the technician design your new smile: the shape, length and colour of the teeth. You see it before we start.

  3. Preparing the teeth.

    We treat whatever needs treating: root canals under the microscope, gum treatment and laser where needed. Then the teeth are prepared for the restoration.

  4. The fixed temporaries.

    From the first day of treatment you go home with a fixed temporary restoration. You don't spend a single day without teeth.

  5. The final restoration.

    The lab in our building makes the titanium and zirconia arch. We try it in, adjust it on the spot and fix it in place.

  6. Check-ups.

    You come back for a check-up a week after the restoration is fitted, then at 3, 6 and 12 months, depending on how complex the restoration is.

You don't need time off work to have your teeth redone

Dr. Dimir says his patients don't have to take time off. After every visit they leave the clinic with fixed temporaries, so the next day they go to work. And if there is a wedding on the weekend between visits, they go to the wedding and smile in the photos.

How long D'Original takes

The final restoration is ready in 5 working days, in eligible cases, after an assessment. The 5 days are counted from the visit when the teeth are prepared: if we prepare them on a Tuesday, the restoration is fitted the following Tuesday. The timeline does not change unless complications arise or you have special requests.

The assessment and the plan come first, at the consultation. If your teeth need longer treatment, for example gum disease treatment that has to be left to heal, the dentist will tell you from the plan how long it takes in your case.

Between visits you have fixed temporaries. You go to work, eat and talk normally.

D'Original Plus: when implants are needed too

D'Original Plus is the option for cases where some teeth can be kept and others cannot. The restoration is supported by your own teeth and a few implants, placed by Dr. Rovana Socolov, dentist, specialist in oral implantology.

The extractions and implants are usually done on the same day, and you leave with fixed temporaries. The implants then need time to bond with the bone, usually a few months, so the 5-working-day timeline for eligible D'Original cases does not apply to D'Original Plus. The dentist will tell you from the plan how long it takes.

The price of D'Original Plus is set after the assessment, because every case has a different number of implants and of teeth kept.

About implants

What the restoration is made of

The D'Original arch has a titanium framework carrying zirconia crowns. The titanium gives the restoration strength along the whole length of the arch. Zirconia is a hard, tooth-coloured ceramic that does not darken over time.

The restoration is made in the lab in the same building as the treatment rooms. That is why we can try it in and adjust it on the spot, without sending it to another city.

What you feel during treatment and how to look after it

Work on the teeth is done under local anaesthetic. The dentist checks how you are feeling as you go and stops for a break when you need one. After the preparation visits, your teeth may be sensitive for a few days.

In the first days with the new restoration, your tongue and cheeks get used to it. The bite is adjusted at the try-in and at the check-up, if you feel that one tooth touches before the others.

Looking after it:

  • brushing twice a day and cleaning under the restoration, with special floss or a water flosser, which the dental nurse will show you how to use;
  • professional cleaning at the clinic every 6-12 months, depending on your needs;
  • regular check-ups, because the teeth under the restoration remain living or root-canal-treated teeth and need to be monitored.

How much D'Original costs

D'Original costs 6,000 EUR per arch, 12 units: a titanium arch and zirconia crowns, with all the treatment needed for a beautiful, natural smile.

What the price includes:

  • the consultation, X-rays, CT scan and digital scan;
  • the digital smile simulation (Digital Smile Design, DSD);
  • the functional mock-up: trying the new smile directly in your mouth, before the final restoration;
  • the root canal treatments under the microscope needed on the teeth in the arch;
  • gum treatment and laser, where needed;
  • the fixed temporaries;
  • the final restoration: the titanium framework and the 12 zirconia crowns;
  • the try-ins, adjustments and fitting of the restoration;
  • to take home: the Sonair sonic toothbrush and the Sonflow oral irrigator, from Sonum.

Not included: the implants in D'Original Plus cases, which are priced separately, after an assessment.

Payment: in lei, at the National Bank of Romania (BNR) exchange rate on the day of payment.

What you get in writing before treatment

After the assessment you receive a written treatment plan: which teeth stay, what is done on each one, how many visits it takes and the total cost. You take it home and decide in your own time.

The price in the plan stays the same unless root canal treatments are added or removed along the way or, in exceptional situations, a tooth is lost. In that case the cost of one unit is added or taken off.

Frequently asked questions

What is a fixed restoration on your own teeth?

It is a fixed full-arch prosthetic restoration supported by the patient's own teeth, not by implants. At D'Institute it is called D'Original and it has a titanium framework and zirconia crowns.

Can a fixed restoration be done without extractions and without implants?

Yes, when there are enough teeth on the arch that can be kept, with enough bone around them. If some teeth can no longer be kept, the restoration can be supported by teeth and a few implants (D'Original Plus).

How many teeth do I need for it to be possible?

The exact number is decided at the assessment, because it depends on where the teeth sit on the arch and on the bone around them.

How long until I get the final restoration?

The final restoration is ready in 5 working days, in eligible cases, after an assessment. Between visits you have fixed temporaries.

How much does a fixed full-arch restoration cost?

D'Original costs 6,000 EUR per arch, for 12 units, with the necessary treatment included. For D'Original Plus, the price is set after an assessment.

How much does a fixed restoration without implants cost?

At D'Institute, a fixed restoration on your own teeth, without implants, costs 6,000 EUR per arch, 12 units, with the necessary treatment included. The full list is on the prices page.

How long does a zirconia restoration on your own teeth last?

It depends on the health of the teeth under the restoration, on hygiene and on check-ups. The restoration itself is strong; the supporting teeth need looking after like any other tooth, and regular check-ups catch any problem early.

What are the downsides of a bridge on your own teeth?

The supporting teeth are prepared, which means they are ground down, so the restoration can sit on them. Cleaning under the restoration takes a little more care than cleaning separate teeth, using special floss or a water flosser.

What happens if a tooth under the restoration fails?

It depends on the clinical situation and the cause. As a rule, you pay half the cost of the restoration that is redone, which covers the materials.

Can I go to work during treatment?

Yes. You leave the clinic with fixed temporaries after every visit, so you can go to work and go out between visits.

How is it different from a restoration on implants?

A restoration on implants is supported by titanium screws placed in the bone after the teeth are removed. D'Original is supported by your own teeth, which stay. Both are good treatments; the dentist will tell you which one suits you, based on the condition of your teeth.
