Dental crowns in Cluj
A dental crown covers a weakened, broken or root-canal-treated tooth to protect it and give it back its shape. At D'Institute in Cluj-Napoca, zirconia and ceramic crowns are made in the laboratory in the clinic building, usually over two visits and in some cases on the same day.
When you need a crown
- after root canal treatment, especially on back teeth;
- when a tooth has broken or has a large filling that no longer holds;
- when a tooth is cracked;
- when the shape or colour of a tooth needs to change and a veneer isn't enough;
- on an implant, as the visible tooth.

Types of crowns
| Type | When it's used | How long it takes to make |
|---|---|---|
| Zirconia crown | Back and front teeth; it stands up to the force of chewing | Usually a few days; sometimes the same day |
| All-ceramic crown | Front teeth, where the way light passes through the tooth matters a lot | Usually a few days |
| Endocrown | Root-canal-treated molars whose walls are still sound; it is also anchored inside the tooth | Usually a few days; sometimes the same day |
How it works, step by step
- The consultation and X-ray.
The dentist checks the root and decides whether the tooth can take a crown.
- Preparing the tooth.
Under local anaesthetic, the tooth is shaped just enough for the crown to fit.
- The scan.
Instead of impression putty, the tooth is scanned digitally.
A temporary crown, if the final one isn't ready the same day.
Making the crown in the clinic's laboratory.
- Try-in and fitting.
The dentist checks the shape, colour and bite, then cements the crown.

A crown made in the clinic's laboratory
Because the laboratory is in the same building, the crown is designed from the scan, milled and finished a few steps from the treatment room. The dentist and the technician can check the colour together, and adjustments are made on the spot.
In suitable cases, after an assessment, you can go home with the new tooth at the same visit. This is usually possible for side teeth that have already had root canal treatment, have large fillings or are partly broken down.
Crown or extraction?
A crown can keep a tooth that would otherwise have been taken out: a partly broken tooth, a root-canal-treated tooth that could crack, a tooth with a filling that is too large. As long as the root is healthy and enough of the tooth is left, the crown keeps it working.
How we decide whether a tooth can be keptWhat you feel during and after treatment
The tooth is prepared under local anaesthetic. After fitting, the tooth may be sensitive to cold for a few days. If the crowned tooth seems to touch first when you bite, come back to the clinic: the bite can be adjusted in a few minutes.
How much a crown costs
The price depends on the material: zirconia, ceramic or endocrown. All the fees, with what each one includes, are in the price list.
Who does the crowns

Frequently asked questions
How much does a zirconia crown cost? And a ceramic one?
The price varies with the material and is shown in the D'Institute price list, under Prosthetic work. After the consultation, the dentist will tell you which crown suits your tooth.
How long does it take to make a dental crown?
Usually two visits, a few days apart. In suitable cases, after an assessment, the crown is made on the same day in the clinic's laboratory.
What does getting a dental crown involve?
The tooth is shaped under local anaesthetic and scanned digitally, then the crown is made in the laboratory and cemented onto the tooth. Between visits you wear a temporary crown.
Can a dental crown be repaired?
A slightly chipped crown can sometimes be polished or repaired in the chair. If it has broken or come off, a new one is usually made. The dentist also checks the tooth underneath.
Why does a tooth with a crown hurt?
A crowned tooth can be sensitive for a few days after fitting. If the pain starts later, the cause may be a bite that is too high, decay at the edge of the crown or a problem with the root. It is worth having it checked by a dentist.
What is an endocrown and when is it used?
An endocrown is a crown that is also anchored inside a root-canal-treated tooth, not just on its walls. It is used on molars and keeps more of the tooth than a conventional crown.
Which crowns are used on front teeth?
Front teeth usually get all-ceramic or aesthetic zirconia crowns, which let light through like a natural tooth.
Can the crown be made on the same day?
Yes, in suitable cases, after an assessment. The laboratory is in the clinic building, so a crown can be designed, milled and fitted at the same visit.
