A second opinion before extraction

An extraction can't be undone. Before you have a tooth taken out, or all of them, come for a consultation at D'Institute. The dentist looks at your X-ray, examines you and tells you which teeth can be kept and what options you have.

You leave with the answer and you decide. You don't have to start treatment with us.

What you find out at a second opinion

Many people come to us after putting it off for years, with an extraction plan in hand and the feeling that nothing more can be done.

They come to understand. At the consultation they see on their own X-ray, tooth by tooth, what stays and why.

Some leave knowing they can keep more than they thought.

Others leave knowing for sure that extraction is the answer, and that reassures them just as much: the decision is theirs, made with all the information in front of them.

How a second opinion works

  1. You book.

Using the form below, by phone or on WhatsApp, at +40 754 478 202.

  2. We look at your X-ray.

Bring your panoramic X-ray and the treatment plan you were given, if you have them. If you don't have an X-ray, we take one at the clinic, at the same visit.

  3. The dentist examines you.

They look at the X-ray, then in your mouth: how much each tooth moves, what the gums look like, how your teeth bite together.

  4. You get the answer there and then.

The dentist shows you on the X-ray which teeth can be kept, which can't, and why. They tell you what options you have and what each one costs.

  5. You decide.

You go home with the answer. You don't have to start treatment with us to get the opinion.

What the X-ray shows and what the dentist sees in the chair

A panoramic X-ray shows the whole mouth at a glance: how much bone each tooth has, what the roots look like, any infection at their tips, and the old dental work and root canal treatments you have. For a first impression, the panoramic X-ray is enough.

Panoramic X-ray showing all the upper and lower teeth, with the upper and lower jaw

Some things, though, show up at the examination in the chair and nowhere else: how much a tooth moves, how deep the gum pockets are, how your teeth meet when you bite. That is why a second opinion is given at a consultation, not from the X-ray alone. A correct diagnosis needs both.

If more detail is needed, for example before an implant, the dentist may ask for a CT scan (CBCT). We do that at the clinic too.

When a second opinion is worth asking for

A few situations in which people come to us for a second opinion:

  • You have been given an extraction plan for several teeth or for the whole arch, followed by a restoration on implants.
  • Loose teeth, because of gum disease, that you have been told can no longer be kept.
  • Old dental work that has failed: a bridge that has come loose, a broken crown, with the tooth underneath still there.
  • A root canal treatment said to be impossible, or an old root canal that has become infected again.
  • A big decision to make and the need to hear it explained again, clearly, before you make it.

You have the right to a second opinion

The Code of Ethics for dentists in Romania (article 46) recognises the patient's right to ask another dentist for their view. It is a normal part of medicine, for any important decision. Dentists expect it, and it is not a sign of mistrust towards the dentist who saw you first.

Who gives you the second opinion

The second opinion is given by the D'Institute dentists. Dr. Cătălin Dimir, dentist, coordinates the cases where the question is whether the teeth can be kept. He works with Dr. Adriana Morar, endodontics specialist, on root canal treatments, and with Dr. Rovana Socolov, dentist, specialist in oral implantology, when implants are needed too.

What happens after the second opinion

The consultation usually leads to one of two paths:

D'Institute dentist working at the dental microscope

The teeth can be kept. The dentist suggests the treatments that will keep them: root canal treatment under the microscope, crowns or, when the whole arch is involved, a fixed restoration on your own teeth, D'Original.

D'OriginalRoot canal under the microscope

3D-printed surgical guides and dental models, for planning implants

Some teeth can no longer be kept. The dentist then explains why and what goes in their place: a restoration on the remaining teeth and a few implants (D'Original Plus), or implants.

Dental implants

Either way, you get a written treatment plan with a clear, transparent price, so the decision is easier and fully informed.

Ask for a second opinion

A second opinion is a regular consultation, 200 lei, with the panoramic X-ray included (price list).

Frequently asked questions

What is a dental second opinion?

It is a consultation with a different dentist from the one who suggested your treatment, to find out whether there are other options. At D'Institute, a second opinion is given in the chair, after an X-ray and a clinical examination.

Can I ask for a second opinion before an extraction?

Yes, and that is when it matters: once a tooth has been extracted, it can no longer be kept. You book, bring your X-ray, and the dentist tells you which teeth can stay.

How much does a second opinion cost?

A second opinion is paid as a regular consultation: 200 lei, with the panoramic X-ray included.

Do I need a new X-ray?

Not if you have a panoramic X-ray from the last year. In some cases the dentist will take a new one sooner. Bring your X-ray on a USB stick, or send it on WhatsApp to +40 754 478 202 or by email. If you don't have one, we take it at the clinic, at the same visit.

Do I get a diagnosis or just an opinion?

You get a diagnosis, because the dentist examines you in the chair, not just on the X-ray. You leave with the explanation, the treatment options and the price of each.

Do I have to have treatment at D'Institute after the second opinion?

No. You pay for the consultation and leave with the answer. You decide where and when to have treatment.

Can I come if I'm not from Cluj?

Yes. Many patients come from other cities and from abroad. Tell us in the form which city you are travelling from, so we can find a time that suits your travel.

Is it rude to my dentist to ask for another opinion?

No. A second opinion is a patient's right, set out in the Code of Ethics, and common practice before a big decision. Dentists know this and understand it.

What happens to my X-ray?

Your X-ray is health data about you. It is seen by the dentists and nurses treating you and no one else, it is kept in your patient file and it is not sent to anyone without your consent. Details in the Privacy policy.
